How to Choose a Personal Loan: 7 Things to Compare

A personal loan can be a smart tool — for consolidating debt, covering an emergency, or financing a big purchase. But not all loans are created equal. Use this seven-point checklist before you sign anything.

1. Compare the APR, not the interest rate

The APR includes fees, so it reflects the true annual cost. Always compare offers on APR. If you’re fuzzy on the difference, read our plain-English guide to APR first.

2. Check the fees

Look for origination fees (often 1–8% of the loan), late fees and — importantly — prepayment penalties. A loan that charges you for paying early is a loan to be wary of.

3. Match the term to the goal

A longer term means a smaller monthly payment but more total interest. A shorter term costs less overall but demands a bigger monthly payment. Pick the shortest term you can comfortably afford.

4. Confirm it’s a fixed rate

Most personal loans are fixed-rate, meaning your payment never changes. If you’re offered a variable rate, understand how high the payment could climb before you accept.

5. Know the funding speed

If you need money fast, ask how quickly funds are disbursed. Many lenders fund as soon as the next business day; some take several. Most online loans let you apply and compare entirely from your phone. For urgent needs, see emergency loans.

6. Borrow only what you need

It’s tempting to accept a larger offer, but every extra dollar accrues interest. Borrow the amount that solves your problem — not a penny more.

7. Vet the lender

Check that the lender is licensed in your state and read independent reviews. Be especially cautious of anyone “guaranteeing” approval or demanding upfront fees — both are red flags. If you’re borrowing with bad credit, our guide covers the specific red flags to watch for.

Shop multiple offers at once

The single best way to get a fair deal is to compare several lenders. Rather than applying one by one, Good Fast Loans matches your one request with offers across our network — with no impact to your credit score to look.
